Ascent Trip ReportI took the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail to get to the Lakes of the Clouds hut. The weather was good, and there were good views from the hut and Mt. Monroe.
The Ammonoosuc Ravine trail starts near the Cog Railway. It keeps an easy elevation gain, along with a few steep downhill sections. After that, the trail continues for about a mile and a half with a moderate grade.
After a spectacular waterfall, the trail gets much steeper, even to the point where a ladder was set up to get up a steep section. As I ascended, the views got better.
After a few more waterfalls and steep sections, the treeline passes, and the views are unobstructed. After a sign saying "No camping within 1/4 mi. of Lakes of the Clouds hut, that very hut terminates the trail.
I went in to explore, take a video, and get a free pancake, and then headed on to Mt. Monroe.
The Crawford Path leads to the Mount Monroe loop at a moderate grade. The loop goes up to the summit and parallels the Crawford Path. Some sections are steep; others are easier.
After a few minutes, what appears to be the summit gives way to the real summit.
The summit is small and rocky, but has great views of the southern Presidential Range. I got some water and a snack, then headed back toward the hut to go to Mt. Washington.
