Ascent of Mahogany Mountain on 2011-06-20
|Date:||Monday, June 20, 2011|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||6227 ft / 1897 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI approached Mahogany Mtn from the south. The road is rough, rocky, and long. There are forks in this seldom used road that will get you lost. On Red Rock Road there is a broken sign at the turnoff indicating that the road goes to Mahogany Mtn and then to Dorris. It does, but the mileage on the road is not any where close to accurate. There are probably other routes up to the JF Mtn/Mahogany Mtn saddle, but the route I took took me past the Red Rock Lakes and was 11.8 miles to the saddle. There were some turns on way, but I didn't note the mileage at each spot.
After hiking up the brushy east ridge to the high point, I decided to continue north on the road to see if I could get to Dorris and then home. The road north is a little better than coming up from the south. However, at the bottom of Modoc Gulch (4.7 miles from the saddle) there is a ranch and what appeared to be a locked gate barring my exit. Fortunately I found a clasp in the chain locking the gate and made my escape. This gate is posted as private property and no trespassing, but I wasn't going back all the way to Red Rock Road. Brushy views from the summit.
