Ascent Trip ReportA spectacular rocky-ridge trail over two peaks, better still after the foliage ..... 3.6 miles, 2h10 hours RT for both peaks.
I started out hiking to Higby Mountain, however on the way one has to go over a spectacular sub-peak (South) that merits to be listed in the PB library. So on the return trip from Higby I identified the South highpoint added it as a provisional "Higby Mountain-South Peak" for Greg's approval. The best access to both summits is northbound on the Mattabesset Trail, from it's TH Parking on the south side of the Mountain on Hwy 66.
To get to the TH from Middleton we drove west on Hwy 66 to the intersection of 66/147 (stop light), continued west on 66 half a mile to the crest-of-the-road and the TH Parking on the right (where 66 becomes a divided Hwy).
Follow the well-signed/blue-blazed Mattabesset Trail northbound as it climbs/follows the open/rocky ridge to both summits, after the South Peak the trail drops to Preston Notch before the final climb to Higby Mountain. The best time to do this hike would be after the foliage.
I estimate the trail distances as per following, TH to South Peak .6 miles, South Peak to Higby 1.2 miles.
I chose my high spot for Higby at a rocky outcrop, GPS 41.55064, 72.74127.
