Ascent Trip Report

Mount Dome can be a difficult place to get to the trailhead. I approached from teh west and Red Rock Road. I took so many wrong turns and wandering around in the short forest, that I will describe how to get there from the east. I went out this way. find the Lava Beds National Mounument and enter from the north. From the pay station, go 3.0 miles south and turn right on a dirt road that has a sign that it is not maintained for public use. Go east and ignore any branch roads, staying on the main road. At 6.3 miles from the pay station go through a barb wire gate and at 9.7 miles turn right on a lesser road that goes directly towards Mt Dome. Follow this road up another 1.6 miles where it kind of ends and park.

The hike is straight forward. You should be parked on the south ridge of Mt Dome. Follow it to the summit. Above 6,200 ft the ridgeline is brushy and rocky. Fortunately, someone cut a path through the brush dirctly on the ridge for the last .4 mile. There is a great view of Mt Shasta from the summit.
