Ascent of Marys Mountain on 2011-06-03
|Date:||Friday, June 3, 2011|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||7699 ft / 2346 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI approached Mary's Mtn from I-80 exit 271 named Palisades. This is an odd offramp because there is nothing there except a dirt road heading north. Go north 1.9 miles to an intersection that looks like a triangle, go left and then in .1 mile take the right fork up the steep hill. I used 4WD because it was muddy. In another mile pass a coule of high voltage buried cable signs. Continue up the hill another 1.7 miles approaching the comm towers on Mary's Mtn South. About .1 mile before you get to the towers stop at elevation 7,507 ft. The right fork of the road goes steeply down a hill towards Mary's Mtn. Only drive down if the road is bone dry, otherwise hike from here.
I hiked from the top of the road down to the saddle at about 7,100 ft and then the road forks going left and right. I took neither and hiked directly up the south ridge of Mary's Mtn. If you are still driving the better road goes right but doesn't get to the summit. The left one does go all the way to the summit, but may be undrivable. I hiked up the south ridge, eventually picking up an old cat trail near the top and followed it to the rounded summit. Great views from the summit. There is a large open pit mine to the east.
