Ascent Trip ReportA drive up with a short walk in a cemetery ..... 100 yards, 10 minutes RT.
We drove south on Hwy 278 into Brooklyn and exited at 39th Street (exit 23), at the bottom of the ramp we made a left-U-Turn eastbound on 39th, 3 blocks and a left on 5th Avenue, north .68 miles (14 blocks) to 25th Street and the Green Wood Cemetery Main Entrance on the right (east).
We drove through the archway in the beautiful Main Entrance Brick Building (no one questioned us), stayed left and drove the winding asphalted road to the crest of the road and the summit area (on the way up we always stayed left at intersections). We parked here and walked 50 yards northwest to the highground ..... the small bump occupied by the Philip and Latifee Kiamie mausoleum.
This is one huge cemetery with beautiful grounds and architecture, designated a "National Historic Landmark" in 2006. We spent a good hour driving the grounds and enjoying the beauty/tranquility of the place. We had to ask a car-patrolling Security Guard for directions since the winding roads are somewhat confusing. A funeral was just entering the Main Entrance as we were leaving.
This visit completes my Long Islands CoHPs.
