Ascent Trip Report

I hiked Hyko (also called South Pahroc) with Dean Molen. He has a nice page on Summit Post for this peak. He drove so I don't have driving directions to the trailhead, but we ended up just east of the peak in a nice valley.

From the trailhead we hiked up the steep slope to the ridgeline, then turned right towards the summit. Along here we came across a cute little pika who wanted to play and Dean wanted to take him home, but we left him to entertain the next hiking group. Hiking towards the summit was uneventful until we entered a burned over area of trees and big boulders. This is a maze that requires some sense of direction to find a way towards the summit area. Lots of turns and changes of directions without being able to see the summit. When we finally got close enough to see the summit, it looked like it may be a technical rock climb. It was a good thing Dean had been here before. We climbed towards the left side of the summit, then crossed a ledge across the face before finding a crack that was a Class 3 scramble to the summit. Great views and a fun scramble with a maze puzzle to solve.
