Ascent Trip Report

Fields Peak Trail #212 is still used as an ATV trail. The round gravelly summit looks like it could have been bulldozed into place. Foundations of an old lookout on top. A variety of colorful butterflies were all over the summit. Being a very clear day, the top 1000 feet of the snow-covered Three Sisters (125 miles) stood out against the blue horizon. The Elkhorn and Strawberry Ranges stood out to the northeast and east.

Scrambled and bushwacked my way down the east ridge to pick up the McClellan Mountain Trail. This trail weaves around several sub-peaks along the ridge to the east. Deep snow/cornices on the northeast sides of the sub-peaks were very difficult to cross without ice axe or crampons. (On return, I just went off trail around the south sides.)

At Peak 6676, turned left off-trail and followed the ridge to Moon Peak. The ridge top was rocky but mostly level and easy to traverse. The only views better than Fields Peak were of the John Day Valley.

Went back to the trail and turned left toward McClellan. At the first saddle, the trail turns south to go around another sub-peak and then descends the ridge altogether; it does not go to the summit. I left the trail to stay high on the south side of the sub-peak, down to the next saddle, then approached McClellan along its long western ridge. It was a mix of grassy meadows and sagebrush, some of which required thoughtful route planning. Coming up McClellan, I found it easier to traverse along the south side below some rock outcrops and summited from the southeast. McClellan had similar views to Fields Peak without the Three Sisters. Returned the way I came, except staying on the south side of the ridge to avoid the cornices.

Nearly all of this trip was in the open (no shade), and no springs or streams.
