Ascent Trip ReportSome of the driving directions posted elsewhere need to be fine-tuned. From I-40/85 westbound near Burlington NC: Zero the odometer at the bottom of Exit 149 and head S on NC 49. 8.8 L on Beale Road 10.3 L on Mount Hermon-Rock Creek Road 12.0 R on Fire Tower Road 12.1 pavement ends 12.8 L at fork past Private Property sign 13.0 arrive at foot of firetower.
I didn't see the security cameras mentioned in previous reports, and the only deterrent I saw was the "Private Property" sign, which looked more like a government sign than something put up by a homeowner. Perhaps it refers to the cell tower or fire tower. As I arrived, another car was leaving the summit. The gravel road has been improved and can be driven by car all the way to the top--just watch out for a couple of oil-pan rocks on the way up.
There's a rock outcropping across the road from the firetower that might be a candidate for the HP.
My 63rd COHP, 31st in NC, and 3rd of the day.
