Ascent Trip ReportThis is a great hike up the lava flows. The road from the saddle to the observatory (18 miles long) is paved, single lane, and has some pot holes in places. The parking area is at about 11,000 ft and is way above tree line. The route is well marked with huge cairns about every 100 ft. The hike was kind of tiring or maybe the altitude made me slow because it took almost 7.5 hours to complete. It was cold in the morning with frost on the rocks. Beautiful colors in the lava and fantastic views. Lots of rock hopping on this one so don't wear your flip flops. I had the entire mountain to myself all day long. Never saw anyone.
