Ascent of Peak 5620 on 2010-11-03
|Date:||Wednesday, November 3, 2010|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||5620 ft / 1712 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI approached Peak 5620 from the west. I exited I-5 at the Mt Ashland ski exit, took Old Hwy 99 south, passed the turn to go to Mt Ashland and found the signed road that goes to Pilot Rock. This road is rocky, but not 4WD. If you don't have good tires, expect to get a flat tire. I drove past the Pilot Rock parking area at 2.1 miles from the Old Hwy 99 and continued another 1.7 miles to Porcupine Gap. Here the road ends for regular vehicles.
The PCT is about 30ft on the far side of the gate. I opted to hike the quad track north on the near side of the gate and hiked up to Porcupine Mtn and then continued down the north side where I picked up the PCT. I hiked the PCT dfor a couple miles until I was near Peak 5620 and then hiked up to the ridgeline and out to the highpoint. Great views from the high point and also along the PCT. On the way back to the parking area, I stayed on the quad track that parallels the PCT for much of the distance. I didn't hike over Porcupine Mtn though. Instead I stayed on the PCT and it took me through a nice old growth forest before going back to Porcupine Gap. This was a nice hike.
