Ascent of Little Chinquapin on 2010-10-21
|Date:||Thursday, October 21, 2010|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||5725 ft / 1744 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI approached Little Chinquapin from the southern end of Howard Prairie Lake and took Yew Springs Road 39-4e-60 into the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument. There is a maze of roads around Little Chinquapin so I decided to try to approach from the west side. I found a rough road that took me all the way to the saddle near the summit. The road isn't 4WD, but high clearance is helpful the last mile. At the saddle the topo said the highpoint was at the northeast end of the ridge. I hiked out there and was treated with good views. Hiking back to the saddle I hiked over a rocky outcropping that I think is about 5 ft higher than the 5725 spot shown on the topo. Also I hiked southwest from the saddle and found another rock outcropping that appeared to be another 10 ft higher than the other rock outcropping. Nice views in places.
