Ascent Trip Report

I hiked the easy route up Katahdin. I paid my $14 at the gate and easily found the trailhead at Katahdin Stream Campground. I got there early and it was a bit chilly, so I headed out the well marked trail past several occupied campsites. I signed in at the register and enjoyed the first part of the hike up to the falls. I took a minute to enjoy the falls before continuing up the steep rocky trail. I passed 2 hikers who started before I did on this stretch and soon found myself coming out of the tree cover and enjoying the views of the trees with their fall colors. The scramble from about 3,400 ft to 4,500 ft was fun with several Class 3 spots. I was glad the rocks were not wet. Near the top of the rock scramble I noticed a hiker behind me was gaining on me. After gaining the plateau like summit area, I noticed a small black bear near Thoreau Pond. He noticed me about the same time and he took off over the south side of Katahdin. That was a nice treat. The hiker caught me just after Thoreau Spring and beat me to the summit by a few minutes. "Spoonz" was a thru-hiker on the AT and she completed the trail this day on Katahdin. Nice views but there was a cool wind on the summit. Spoonz and I didn't stay long because of the cold and we headed down. We passed about 5 other AT hikers completing their hike as we headed down. This was a fun hike and I would do it again.
