Ascent Trip Report

I got an early start but it was not looking good for this one. It was raining or so I thought when I got to the TH. But I soon realized that it was actually snowing. Cool and quite windy too. I sat in my car reading for about 3 hours waiting for the weather to clear. Thankfully I knew that the hike was quite short so there was no time crunch and while the weather was horrid it was not the sort of clouds that spit out lightning. At around noon it cleared momentarily and I made a play for it. There's a good trail and the distance is quite short. Nonetheless I did the whole round-trip hike without stopping for a break. I started at Lewis Lake and the trail passes through some lakes and then up to a saddle. Then up the talus slope of Medicine Bow. Very scenic area and I really liked it. The climb itself isn't really a challenge at all. I got to the top and signed into the lame register that was a tin can that was not even sealed. I then continued on to the other COHP. The trail I was on seemed to go closer to the HP then the trail as indicated on the map did. Maybe I was just on a bootpath or maybe the map is wrong. Either way I hit the top and then bailed out to get out of the weather. That was that. There is a new fee for this area which I think was $5. And the fresh snow helped dissuade me from doing Longs CO the next day since it seemed to be snowing there too and Longs is another 2000' higher plus fresh snow would have been a problem. Oh well. I could imagine coming back to the Medicine Bow area again as it is a winner.
