Ascent Trip ReportHiked on Herd Path to Mt Gray. At the trailhead of herd path, there is a cairn.
Hiked to Marcy, Skylight and Gray from one of camp sites at Colden Dam with Ken.H. We parked our cars at Upper Works and hiked in about 6 miles with Calamity Brook Trail toward Lake Colden on Aug 23, Monday. About 1 miles or so from Upper Works, Calamity Brook Tr was VERY muddy. Without gore-tex boots and gaiters, our hikes would had been difficult. All 8 Lean-tos were used by someone around the lake, so we decided to set up our own tents at the South edge of Lake Colden. Next morning, we hiked on Opalescent Tr and Feldspar Brok Trail and reached to "Four Corners" (intersection of ADK Tr #121, #122 and #118), then grabbed Marcy/Skylight/Gray peaks altogether. It's .4 miles from 4 Corners to Skylight, 0.8 miles to Marcy. The herd path entrance to grab Gray summit is located just before The Lake of the Clouds. Don't miss cairns at FeldSpar Br Tr.
Once we found cairn, we started to hike in to Gray Peak. The herd path wasn't very difficult to hike. It was just unmaintained path, therefore, there were some blowdown trees, overgrown brunches and leaves on spruce. Some sections of path were very muddy.
