Ascent of Whaleback on 2010-08-05
|Date:||Thursday, August 5, 2010|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||5820 ft / 1773 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI accessed Whaleback from Hwy 62 and the paved Woodruff Bridge turnoff. This is FR 68 and turns into a good gravel road in a couple miles. I followed the road up to a saddle near Quartz Mountain and then turned south onto a lesser road. It was still 2WD, but it was narrow and lots of pot holes. I drove close to the summit on the west side of the ridge and parked. Easy hike to the larger 5800 contour and then climbed a pile of rocks. I hiked over to the small 5800 contour to the south, but this spot is probably 20 ft lower than the rock pile to the north. No views in the forest.
