Ascent Trip Report

My main source of information was Gary Fallesen's book, which one should read for a better understanding of the area. I drove right up to the highpoint a la Bob packard's TR and did not do the hike as per Fallesen.
The highpoint is in the Bear Swamp State Forest at the south end of Skaneateles Lake. It has a large network of multi-use trails.

I approached from the south, the Courtland area, by travelling north on hwy #41 to road junction with #41A. I turned left on #41A and motored north 8.45 miles to a right turn on Iowa Road, passing through the village of Sempronius at 8 miles. This Iowa Road is 4.8 miles south of the village of New Hope.
Drive east 1.5 miles to the end of Iowa Road at Bear Swamp Road, turn left and drive north .55 miles to a right turn on Ridge Road (not signed). Ridge Road heads east then bends north up the ridge, passing a family cemetery on the left at .6 miles. At 1 mile from Bear Swamp Road a small parking is on the left ...... this is the TH, my GPS coordinates here read 42.75229, 76.28019, round-yellow-disc signs on trees for trails #5, #6, & #9.

We visited the small cemetery, 5 headstones for the Wilcox family dating back to the mid 1800, 5 small USA flags nicely decorated/brightened the site.

I did a clockwise loop while Rose waited in the van. From the TH I could see high ground to the west, so I hiked west on trail #5 a short distance (60 yds) before entering the woods and the high ground to the left of the trail. I circled the area trying to hit the high spot.
I continued west on #5 a short distance before again turning north in the woods always looking for the high ground. I tried to hit all the spots, however it was impossible for me to identify the highpoint. I returned to the van after about half-a-mile/45 minutes of walking, satisfied with the effort.
