Ascent Trip ReportThis hike was pretty much not meant to be today. We decided to start at the Horton trailhead, but due to our lack of a good trail map we didnt really have a clue about how far away we were starting. We also got a late start to boot(10:30). After wading through stinging nettles on the lower half of the Horton Trail, we arrived at the Allegheny Mountain Trail only to find the intersection with the Huckleberry Trail to the summit was non-existant. Our poor excuse for a map said it was there but it wasnt. We then hiked down the AMT and picked up the Bear Hunter Trail and then up the Judy Springs Trail where we finally met the HT about 2:30 pm. Stopping for a break at the intersection, we met a couple of mountain bikers coming down from the summit who told us we had a good five miles to go, all uphill. After kicking the idea around for a bit, we finally decided to pack it in to avoid a possible hike out in the dark. Kind of aggravating to hike 14 miles round trip on a summit attempt on a nice day and not even get a whiff of the summit after driving eight hours to get there.
