Ascent of Modoc Benchmark on 2010-05-19Date: | Wednesday, May 19, 2010 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Modoc Benchmark | Location: | USA-Oregon | Elevation: | 6551 ft / 1996 m |
Ascent Trip ReportI accessed Modoc Benchmark from Hwy 97 and the road near Modoc Point. The road is paved but narrow for the first part and then it is good gravel all the way up to the turn off at about 5,900 ft towards the summit. I parked at this turn off because the road was blocked by snow. This is a pretty hike through a nice forest of fir trees. I followed the road first east and then took the north fork to the summit. It looks like there was a fire lookout on the summit at one time, but now there are just the concrete foundation blocks. I couldn't find any benchmarks on the nearby rocks. I did find a higher area about 200 ft south of the fire lookout. It was a fun little scramble on some large boulders to get to this high point and my GPS indicated it was 7 ft higher than the area near the concrete blocks. There was still snow on this route and in places it was up to 3 ft deep. This area is used by snowmobilers in the winter.
