Ascent of Alco Rock on 2010-05-15
|Date:||Saturday, May 15, 2010|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||4503 ft / 1372 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI accessed Alco Rock from the road up to Ragsdale Butte. The road isn't very good, but 2Wd should be able to drive some of it. It isn't very far over to Also Rock and you should be able to hike from the good road. I didn't drive to the end of the road because I didn't know what was ahead. I hiked what was left of the road to the north ridge and then hiked straight up the north ridge. This area has been logged and burned, so route finding is no problem. I could see the rock on the summit and was concerned with finding a route to the summit. When I got close I could see a cleft in the rock directly ahead on the north ridge. It was an easy scramble up about 15 ft to the top of Alco Rock. The top of the rock is good size and covers a couple of acres. I hiked around trying to find which boulder was the highest and narrowed it down to 3 candidates. There are several burned snags that populate the summit. The views aren't very good from the summit.
