Ascent of Mount Dana in 1970-08| Date: | August, 1970 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Motorized Transport to Trailhead: | Car | | Peak: | Mount Dana | | Location: | USA-California | | Elevation: | 13057 ft / 3979 m |
Ascent Trip ReportMy first summit, attained the day before I turned 17. We started at Tioga Pass after a greeting from Ferdinand at the Park Service entrance station("many people hunt, many people fish" he said as his arm swept the horizon). It's been some time but I remember the loose scree and the rock pile that was the mountain. The day was warm and the sky cloudless which ment great views of the valley below and Mono Lake. Another thing that has stuck in my mind from that climb was the retired couple we passed on the way up "What are they doing up here now, I'm not waiting til I retire to start climbing peaks" I thought.
