Ascent Trip Report

Woke up with a cold on sat morn feeling pretty ill, but had planned on the hike for a few weeks and we had great weather so made breakfast had some tea and "vitamin - i" & got in the car. Met up with JDA at I-5 interchange & headed over to the Pilchuck TH. Trail started out forested with no snow until we'd climbed 500 feet or so. Lots of nice snow after that - trail was pretty well packed down though. Breaking out of the trees into the snowy landscape with the full view of the peak I was glad I had decided to climb. There were alot of people on the mountain, but it only felt crowded in a few places. Varying gear choices were observed from full-gear climbing groups with crampons, ice-axes & ropes to folks in gym shorts & running shoes(!). Both groups observed at summit. The view was pretty good, though a bit hazy, we could see Baker, Rainier, the Olympics, the Sound & more. Made it to the summit @ 12:30. The lookout cabin was open but only one shutter was halfway up so there wasn't much view while we took a break and had some snacks & rehydrated. As we left the top a few gliders showed up and spent the next 30 minutes or so soaring around the summit. It was an amazing sight to see, very graceful. The sound of the gliders slicing through the wind was pretty cool too. We kept on down the mtn, sliding down the smoother slopes & enjoying the sun & the views. I'd felt pretty good on the way up, being out in the sunshine & fresh air, but halfway down was starting to feel pretty crappy - just wanted to get to the car & drive back home & go to bed. Got home took some cold medicine & went to bed. Definitely worth it.
