Ascent Trip ReportFollowing our misfortune of the morning (technically we were trespassing and subject to eviction), we drove back to Québec at Gabriel B's place where the second group was getting ready. As soon as we got there, a new plan arose, which was to head for Parc des Grands-Jardins, where many mountaintops devoid of trees could give us nice slopes.
We finished packing up then left to pick up Francis and got on our way. After an hour's ride, we stopped in Baie-Saint-Paul where we ate a sandwich. It was only a short distance to our trailhead now, and after another half-hour, we parked at accueil Thomas-Fortin, one of the larger entry points for Parc des Grands-Jardins. The pulks were loaded, the packs were donned, and we left across the road into ZEC des Martres, east of route 381. Our goal was to get over the first bump and away from the road, close to the 1000m ridges. This is a burnt area that still hasn't grown back after the last fire in 1994. Going uphill on a decent slope with pulks wasn't easy, but we eventually made it to a col after about an hour. One pulk had been left behind and a team of 3 left to get it while Stéphanie and I started setting up camp. We cleared tent spots, and started digging the common area. Snow cover was amazing and the pit was already almost full sized when the others came back with the tents which were in the second pulk. We then proceeded to explore the surroundings while Francis made a short descent on his skis from the nearby summit (Montagne de l'Accueil). The sun was coming down now, and we needed to get ready to head back down to the cars. We had agreed to meet François there at 7:00pm. Amélie and I left for the trailhead around 6:15pm and it took no more than 15 minutes to get all the way down.
