Ascent Trip Report

The Mauna Kea access road was closed last Saturday and Sunday morning due to ice on the road. The Mauna Kea Visitor Information Center announced on their website about 11 a.m. on Sunday that the road was now open, but only to 4x vehicles. I started to worry about the rental mini-van that I reserved for our 5 days on the island. I asked the guy at the rental car company about upgrading my vehicle to a 4x and is it possible to drive the rental car to the summit. He said that they do not allow their vehicles to be driven above the visitor information center, and then added that he could upgrade my vehicle to a 4x at no extra charge - of course, I said yes!

The actual road is in great shape, and is probably passable to non-4x vehicles; however, the road is pretty steep and you also need to drive past the sign that says 4 wheel drive required.
