Sugar and I drove back Caribou road at 6am. I parked at the parking lot at yellow gate across the road. There was only one other car. I started up the road at 6:30. I arrived at the AT 12 minutes later and started up the Sugarloaf trail. You cross a camp ground and a stream right away and then the trail starts going up. I made it to the junction with the Sugarloaf spur at 7:56am (2.3 miles from the road). I hiked the .5 mile spur up to the peak of Sugarloaf arriving at 8:14am. The peak of Sugarloaf has some awesome views, but also has a couple towers on it that must be walked around to get full 360 views. The peak is bald. There is a cairn to mark the peak. The USGS marker is gone. I then made my way back AT junction arriving at 8:52am. I then made my way over to Spaulding. In-between Sugarloaf and Spaulding there is a plaque mounted on a large stone in honor of the men of the CCC that worked on the AT. I arrived at the Spaulding peak sign which states “Spaulding Mtn. 150 yards M.A.T.C” at 9:42am. I went to the peak of Spaulding which is completely wooded with no views. There are a couple trails that are easy to follow to a couple lookout points with views of the surrounding mountains. I took some pictures and a break on top of Spaulding. Sugar and I left Spaulding at 9:57 and continued down the AT past the Spaulding Leanto and on to the spur that leads up Abraham. We arrived at this junction at 10:51am. We continued on up the Abraham trail arriving on the peak at 11:45am. Abraham was the nicest peak of the day. It was totally bald and had awesome views. I found one marker for the peak. There is a cairn that is not on the peak. The peak is where the old tower used to stand. The tower is in pieces beside the main peak. We took a break for lunch. We started back down at 12:10 making our way back over Spaulding and Sugarloaf back to our car on Caribou Road. (It is much better to car spot this and hike down the east side of Abraham). We made the AT/Abraham spur junction at 1:01pm. We made the top of Spaulding at 1:59pm. By this time my right knee and Achilles was really hurting so I slowed down a lot. I stopped to stretch a lot. I made it to the Sugarloaf/AT spur junction at 2:58pm. I continued down to the road arriving at 4:31pm. I hiked the half mile down the road back to my car arriving at 4:44pm. It was a long day and I relax in the car. I then drove to Rangeley to get dinner and prepare for the next day’s hike of Saddleback and the Horn.
