Ascent Trip Report

Had perfect weather for the ascent which began at 1:30 am after ride to top of ski lift via snow cat. Ascent was via the south route. Cloudless sky, almost full moon. We were in group of eight including three guides from Timberline Mountain Guides. Unfortunately my two sons both did not feel well enough to participate. First section was up to Hogsback with two minor rest breaks. Felt a little faint/nauseous at times but mostly pretty easy. It was much warmer than we expected and my wife was actually in t-shirt up to this point. At Hogsback we donned crampons and roped up in a group of three with our guide Sheldon. Continued upward to a small plateau below some chutes where Sheldon placed snow anchor. Then real climbing began. Huge, beautiful bluish rime ice formations. While waiting for second pitch snow anchor to be placed my legs came close to cramping up, but I luckily managed to shift around enough to ward it off. Got up to summit ridge pretty much at sunrise and was rewarded with beautiful view of pyramidal mountain penumbra. Then to summit and views of Rainier, St Helens, Adams and more. On descent we semi-rappelled down the chute, then it was a very long descent to the parking lot and Timberline Lodge, slogging through slush on the lower parts of the ski area. We had to detour at the end around a photo shoot in progress.
