You can badmouth lists of peaks as the anithesis of everything wilderness and mountaineering stand for, but they are still utterly facinating. WHAT IS A PEAK? A RIGOROUS GEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS Definitions: Direction: One of four more or less equidistanly spaced possible paths emanating from a point, on a horizontal plane parallel with the earth's surface at that point. Peak: A point on the earth's surface where the ground slopes down in all directions. Col: A point on the earth's surface where the ground slopes up in two opposite directions and down in the two other opposite directions. Ridge: A collection of contiguous points on the earth's surface where the land slopes down in three directions and up in one, towards a peak. The resulting set is a set of line segments. Landmass: A piece of land completely surrounded by water, not counting man-made canals, causeways, etc. Culminating Peak: The peak with the highest elevation above sea level on a given landmass. A landmass has only one culminating peak. Higher Neighbor: The closest peak higher than a given peak, with the distance measured along ridges and including in its path the highest col connecting the given peak to any possible higher peak. Every peak on a landmass has a Higer Neighbor except for the Culminating Peak. Rise: The difference in elevations between the elevation of a given peak and the elevation of the lowest col between the peak and its Higher Neighbor. Separation Distance: The distance along ridges from a given peak to its Higher Neighbor. Armed with these definitions, we can now look at the north- eastern United States and try to determine exactly what qualifies as a Separate Peak. The culminating peak of the American mainland is Aconcagua, and the most conservative definition of a Separate Peak would simply write off all others on the landmass. Using this approach, the highest point in the northeast would be Cadillac Mountain, the highest culminating point of a landmass (here, Mt. Desert Island) in the area. The various peak-bagging clubs in the northeast have their own criteria. The Adirondack 46ers designate as separate any "named peak with either a rise of 300 feet or a separation distance of 1 mile." This is clearly silly, and therefore we have to start worrying about rises and separation distances. Mt. Washington (6288 feet), the highest point in the northeast, has a peak called Old Tom in North Carolina (elev. 6500 feet) as its Highest Neighbor, and the lowest col betwwen the two peaks is in the Mohawk Valley at about 400 feet. This gives us a rise of over 5800 feet and a separation distance of about 2,000 miles, measured along ridges. No other peak in the northeast approaches the separation distance, although summits like Marcy, Mansfield, and Katahdin all rise several thousands of feet. At this point I want to eliminate separation distance entirely from the set of criteria used to determine a separate peak. The reasons are: 1. The difficulty of measuring separation distance. Like coastine, distances along ridges vary with the resolution chosen for measurement. 2. Separation distance alone is an arbitrary measure of the degree to which a peak is separate. If a large boulder on a ridgecrest has a rise of 5 feet but is several miles away from a higher neighbor, it would qualify for separate status based on its great separation distance even though it's hardly a peak at all. 3. Rise, no matter what the distance involved, is always a consistent measure of a peak's status. If a peak has a rise of 2000 feet, then it doesn't matter very much if the distance to its higher neighbor is half a mile or ten miles, it is still a dominating peak. 4. In most mountainous areas of the world, including the northeastern United States, rises are almost always closely related to the separation distance, making the latter figure superflous. This means that if there is a great rise, then the distance will also be great. This is because abrupt clefts are rare. On the other hand, a short separation distance can often mean a large rise. Source: This list was complied from the latest available USGS quad maps for the northeastern United States. The only deviation from this was for the Presidential Range, where Bradford Washburns's excellent map was used. This was the only place where a non-USGS map was judged superior to the quads. Rank: I have only ranked peaks that have a vertical rise of over 200 feet (See Rise, below). Mountain: The name of the peak. The name is specific as possible, in many cases naming the peak and the mountain it is a peak of (for example, the Chin, Mt. Mansfield). For peaks with no names, a geographically descriptive name has been invented (for example, North Colden, the peak just to the north of Mt. Colden). The only nameless and truly isolated peak is the one on the Maine- Quebec border between boundary monuments 445 and 446, which has been labelled with a shortened version of the above description. Height: The elevation of the peak above mean sea level. If the summit has no definite elevation on the maps, then the elevation of the highest contour line is given, followed by a "c". This means the number given is a minimum possible elevation. Rise: The rise, in feet, from the peak's highest col with a higher peak. If the rise is greater than 1000 feet, then three dashes appear in this column, indicating that the peak's rise is too great to call into question its peakhood. For most Range: The peak's mountain range. The name that appears here was also designed to be helpful in getting an accurate fix on where the peak is located, so often the "range" is just a geographical direction that relates to the "Mountains" column, especially in the Adirondacks, where there really aren't any real ranges. Mtns: ADK=Adirondacks; CAT=Catskills; ME=Mountains in Maine; NH=White Mountains; VT=Green Mountains. Acc: Access to the peak. AT=Appalachian Trail; LT=Long Trail; Tr=Another regularly maintained trail; R=Auto Road. View: TL=Above Timberline; ATL=At Timberline; O=Open; V=Some nice views; W=Wooded, no views. This is all very subjective, and far from complete. Please take with a grain of salt. Ski: If there is a downhill ski area with lifts on the slopes of the mountain, then the flag "Sk" appears in this column. Club: A FF means it is an official New England Four Thousand Footer; HH indicates an official New England Hundred Highest; 46 indicates an offical Adirondack 46er peak.
